Join Sari (the face behind @irishontherun) on July 8th for the kind of Tanzania trip people talk about for years: an 8-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route (the most scenic route on the mountain), followed by a 4-day safari through Tanzania’s iconic national parks.
The Lemosho Route is known for its panoramic views, lower crowds at the start, and strong summit success rates thanks to the way it’s designed for acclimatisation — crossing the Shira Plateau and following the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu and descending via Mweka Gate.
Full details including pricing, inclusions / exclusions and the complete itinerary are all below.
Tanzania with Sari: 8 Days Lemosho Route + 4 Days Safari
This is a proper bucket-list combo: we’ll start with the adventure of a lifetime — climbing Mount Kilimanjaro — and finish with the ultimate reward: a 4-day safari through Tanzania’s legendary wildlife regions.
It’s challenging, iconic, and fully supported. You’ll have an experienced mountain team (guides, cook and porters), hot meals daily, and treated drinking water throughout the trek. After the summit, we reset with a day to recover — and then head straight into safari mode.
Highlights Include:
- 8-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route — widely considered the most scenic route
- Trek through rainforest to Shira Ridge, then across the Shira Plateau
- Acclimatisation built in (including a high point at Lava Tower before descending to sleep lower)

- Celebration certificates at Mweka Gate after the descent
- A recovery day at leisure in Moshi

Day 3: Big Tree Camp (2,780m) to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

Today we trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather dotted with volcanic rock formations, heading for Shira 1 Camp.
On clear days, you may see Kibo Peak floating above the clouds. We gain a solid amount of altitude today, so pace and hydration matter.
Distance: 8.5km / 5.3mi
Time: ~7 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Day 4: Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,900m)

We continue with a steady climb across the Shira Plateau, with great panoramic views and chances to see the Northern Ice Fields from the western side of the mountain.

Distance: 8km / 5mi
Time: ~5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Day 5: Shira 2 Camp (3,900m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m) via Lava Tower (4,640m)
A huge acclimatisation day: we climb into the upland desert and reach Lava Tower (4,640m) — the high point of the day — for lunch.
Afterward, we descend steeply into the Great Barranco Valley to reach Barranco Camp, sheltered by towering cliffs with wide views across the plains.
Distance: 10km / 6.2mi
Time: ~7 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Day 6: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (3,963m)

Today begins with the famous Great Barranco Wall — a long, tiring climb over rock (not technical), separating us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo.
We pass beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers and continue toward the Karanga Valley, then climb up to Karanga Camp. If you’re feeling strong, there’s an optional acclimatisation trek up to around 4,200m before returning to camp.
Distance: 5.5km / 3.4mi
Time: ~5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Day 7: Karanga Camp (3,963m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

We head to Barafu Camp — summit base camp — crossing steep scree slopes with no vegetation, made tougher by the altitude.
On arrival we eat, rest, hydrate and stay warm. Early dinner, then sleep before the final push.
Distance: 3km / 1.9mi
Time: ~3 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Day 8: Summit Day — Barafu (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) then down to Millennium Camp (3,790m)
We wake around midnight and climb steeply toward the summit glaciers. Expect a tough push, spectacular views, and a sunrise moment as we reach Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim.
From there, we continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa — for a 360° view across Tanzania and Kenya (weather permitting).
We descend back past Barafu for breakfast, then continue down to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.
Distance: 13.4km / 8.3mi
Time: ~12–15 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Day 9: Millennium Camp (3,790m) to Mweka Gate (1,630m) + transfer to Moshi / Arusha

Time: ~4 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch included

Day 14: Safari Day 4 — Ngorongoro Crater + Return to Arusha

Today we visit the Ngorongoro Crater — a collapsed volcano that’s now home to around 25,000 animals and one of the highest predator densities in Africa. The number of zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, antelopes and gazelles is particularly large. They are hunted by lions, hyenas and leopards.
This is one of the best places in Tanzania to spot black rhino (sightings can’t be guaranteed, but this is one of the best chances). After our crater experience, we return to Arusha.

How fit do I need to be to climb Kilimanjaro?
